I am Steven Sevchuk, and this year, I have decided to run the
ING NYC marathon on November 7th, 2010. Running a marathon is a powerful thing. It takes courage, dedication, discipline and stamina, as well as mental and physical fortitude to span the distance until that finish line.
There are three people who have inspired me to run the 26.2 miles that it takes to cross that finish line in Central Park. Their battles with cancer will drive me to keep running. No matter what pain I endure, how exhausted I get or how hopeless I may feel; nothing can hold a candle to what these brave souls endured and the strength they exhibited in the darkest of times. I want to help so that other people do not have to go through what they did.
Through out my life, unfortunately, cancer has been an all too common theme. For this reason, I have chosen to run on behalf of Fred’s Team, a charity whose proceeds benefit the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, an institute pioneering the way in cancer research.
In 2006, George Sevchuk, my father, passed away from prostate cancer that had metastasized and spread through out his body. He was the father of six children, refereed high school basketball, umpired high school and men's recreational baseball and especially loved his family.
In 2008, Laura Sevchuk-Al Nader, my sister, passed away from breast cancer that had metastasized. She had fought the warrior’s battle, but at 42 years young, her body could no longer fight it. She left behind a husband and a 6 year old daughter, as well as 5 siblings and her mother.
In 2010, a dear friend of mine, Anne McAleer, mother of 5 and grandmother of 7, overcame the odds and received the news that every patient prays to hear. She successfully put her lung cancer into remission after years of rigorous and brutal treatment. This is the woman who beat cancer.
I RUN IN THEIR NAME.
If you lost someone to cancer, know someone who has been impacted by cancer, or just want to make a difference, please help
sponsor me and my charity,
Fred’s Team.
Thank you,
Steven Sevchuk
